Crete is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands, the 88th largest island in the world and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, after Sicily, Sardinia, Cyprus, and Corsica.

Crete and a number of surrounding islands and islets constitute the region of Crete, one of the 13 top-level administrative units of Greece. The capital and the largest city is Heraklion.

Crete forms a significant part of the economy and cultural heritage of Greece, while retaining its own local cultural traits. It was once the centre of the Minoan civilisation, which is the earliest known civilisation in Europe. The palace of Knossos lies in Crete.

40 Old Photos Show What School Looked Like in the 1970s

School was different back in the '70s. Students focussed on the basics.. reading, writing, and mathematics. They also learned how to write longhand, and some of them took great pride in their “penmanship”.

Back in the '70s, the personal computer was still very much in the realm of science fiction.. hand held calculators became available in the mid '70s, but they were expensive, and few kids had them. For the most part, students learned through listening to the teacher.. by doing their homework in notebooks, reading “real” books..

School back then seemed more rigorous than it is today. There was no such thing as “grade inflation”.. if you didn't do well then your grades reflected that. Some things are better today.. there's more awareness of bullying.. and less tolerance for it. There's more consideration given today to kids who may be different.. i.e. slow, challenged, gifted etc. Back in the day it was all more or less one big melting pot, and you either sank or swam.

WWII G.I Waiting at Bus Stop With His Girlfriend to Go Off to Fight the War

According to his granddaughter, he returned home.

“The sassy woman in the saddle shoes is my grandma Lois.” Lisa Warninger, who submitted the photo to The Sartorialist, said. “This photograph was probably taken in the 1940s in Yakima, Washington. Lois always spoke her mind and was sharp as a whip.”

A fantastic photo! The pose, the crooked smile, the two-tone shoes, the haltered crop top. She does indeed look like a sharp woman who speaks her mind. The ice cream sign behind them is great too! (The Giant Killer was a sundae with multiple scoops of ice cream, from between 8 and 16. It was covered with bananas, hot fudge, caramel, pineapple, nuts marshmallow topping, cherries, and whipped cream.)

What Happened on Twenty-Third Street, New York City in 1901

54 years before Marilyn, there was Florence Georgie!

The corner of 23rd Street and 6th Avenue was renowned for its gusty breezes that might allow a man to catch a glimpse of a woman’s stockings. In this staged scene we see Alfred Abadie, an Edison cameraman, and Florence Georgie strolling along when Georgie has a Marilyn Monroe type moment.

Some compared the sequence to the iconic image of Marilyn Monroe in the 1955 film The Seven Year Itch. The image of Monroe’s thighs exposed under her billowing skirt entered American popular culture.

This film was restored by the Library of Congress and was copied at 16fps from 35mm. It offers a fascinating glimpse of what Manhattan looked like at the turn of the 20th century. The clothes and vehicles are fantastic!
Only a year after this movie was filmed and the Flatiron building was completed (also on 23rd Street), legend has it that men and boys would loiter around the base of the building (where due to its unique shape, strong winds were generated) in the hopes of catching a glimpse of a young woman’s shapely ankle. Police officers of the time would tell the men to, “Skiddoo”, thus creating the popular phrase of the time, “23 Skiddoo”.

The Library’s motion picture and broadcasting collections provide the opportunity to document not only how women’s roles and their depictions have changed throughout the past hundred years, but also how much has remained the same.

The Face of Shrewsburys Trade: Amazing Vintage Photographs Captured Shropshire Shop Fronts in 1888

An extraordinary set of photographs from the Victorian era provides a glimpse into Shrewsbury’s rich history of independent retail, as entrepreneurs pose outside their companies. The photos shows every shop front imaginable selling everything from cheeses and chocolates to shovels and shoes.

Joseph (Lewis) Della Porta was from a family of shopkeepers. His father, also called Joseph, was an immigrant from Northern Italy. He settled in Shrewsbury in about 1848 and established a small shop on Princess Street. The business prospered and expanded into adjoining shops including Lloyds Mansion, the Tudor building which stood on the corner of the Square. The store sold a wide range of goods such as hardware, furniture, bedding, china and boots and shoes. By the time of Joseph senior’s death in 1904, it was an established and thriving department store, especially noted for its Christmas displays.

As well as being a partner in the family business, Joseph (Lewis) Della Porta was also a keen photographer. Architects plans show that his new house, to be built on the Mount in 1892, included a darkroom. These amazing photographs were taken by Joseph in 1888.
